When Bob and Cheryl Klein commissioned their new Selene 53 Trawler, they expected to spend many years
exploring the world aboard what Cheryl calls "this beautiful
work of art that I call home and that moves with us at our
whim."
Born and raised in the Midwest, Bob has
been "crazy about boats" all his life, but although he and
Cheryl, who was also born and raised in the Midwest, had done
some sailing, they'd both spent most of their lives running
businesses and raising a family. "My entire life has been spent
in business," says Bob. "I've held senior positions in national
companies, but for the past 20 years I've been self-employed
In August 2004, Bob and Cheryl retired from
their respective businesses and sold their home in Colorado to
begin life aboard the Selene yacht they christened "Kasekuchen."
German for cheesecake, the yacht's name reflects both Bob's
heritage and background in the baking industry.
For two years they cruised in the Northwest
and Alaska. Although Cheryl missed her hot tub, she loved
visiting new places and forging new friendships with other
Selene owners. Gourmet cooks, both delighted in being able to
entertain about their Selene preparing fresh-caught seafood
dinners in their modern ship's galley.
But when Howard Chen, founder of Jet-tern
Marine, the manufacturer of Selene Yachts, approached them in
early 2007 and asked them to consider being the Selene
representatives in Florida, Bob and Cheryl's entrepreneurial
spirit and their respect and admiration for Selene yachts made
Chen's offer one they couldn't resist.
“We want to make the process of acquiring a
Selene as fun and exciting for our buyers as it was for us” says
Cheryl. "To facilitate this, we will be partnering with Selene
Annapolis to create a community that is as vibrant as the one we
were involved in on the West coast."
"Our cruising days aren't over," says Bob.
"We plan to explore this area with our beautiful 'Kasekuchen'
in the next year." But for now, he says, "This is a wonderful
opportunity to share our knowledge and help people – both
experienced boaters and newbies – learn about these wonderful
little ships."
"The boat really sells itself," insists
Bob. "The Selene is a wonderful ship, a wonderful home, and it's
exquisite to look at – many people say it's the most beautiful
yacht they've ever seen."
